Varnish: A protective coating given to wood to make it water resistant and
to bring out the colour and pattern of the grain.
Veneer: A thin layer of wood cut from a section of a tree to maximise the
natural beauty of the wood grain. The veneer is then glued on to a solid
backing, usually an inferior wood, and made into furniture.
Victorian: See Early and Late Victorian.
Vitrine: A French term for a display cabinet, often with glazed doors.
